If you're short on space, it's also the narrowest of the three at just 16.5 inches, although like the Midicontrol this does place the pitch-bend and mod wheels above the keys, which may not suit every player. Unlike the black hi-tech look of both the MK125 and Midicontrol, the Oxygen8 follows the latest Korg/Roland/Novation trend with its silver livery. Midiman's undeniably cute Oxygen8 combines both approaches it's a neat, two-octave keyboard with velocity-sensitive full-sized keys, pitch-bend and mod wheels, along with eight assignable rotary MIDI controller knobs, and an additional socket to plug in a sustain pedal. Evolution have also released their MK249C USB, which has a very similar specification. This has a four-octave keyboard and a dozen assignable rotary controls. Miditech were the first to meet the obvious demand for a low-cost keyboard with built-in MIDI controllers with their Midicontrol (reviewed in SOS December 2001).

Photo: Mike CameronThe first of these limitations was removed with the introduction of Evolution's MK125 (reviewed in SOS July 2000), a keyboard with just two octaves' worth of full-sized velocity-sensitive keys, along with pitch and mod wheels, and a clutch of other features including octave switching, patch changing, and transposition. Meanwhile, anyone who wanted more hands-on control of their various hardware and software synths would look at a dedicated controller featuring either sliders or rotary knobs. Until recently, however, keyboard-oriented MIDI studio owners with limited space often had to resort to using keyboard controllers with miniature keys. I have not seen a better option out there for the price, other than ones with mini keys, or the occasional used stuff, but you never know how much life they still have in them. For applications where space or portability are at a premium, it is hard to beat this compact, two-octave MIDI master keyboard, which also incorporates eight assignable real-time MIDI controllers.ĭedicated master keyboard controllers have been available for years, with spans ranging from four to seven octaves, and with a variety of feels from lightweight synth to weighted hammer action. I've had some excellent experience with M-Audio products and this is no exception.

It's also great to not need a separate power cord, as the USB cable powers it along with midi controlling. There are also many midi settings that I'll never use, but for more seasoned midi enthusiasts, there is some great overall control that you can achieve with this. I am using this to trigger virtual instruments like Massive, Kontakt, etc., and it works perfectly with no latency issues.

Changing octaves is quick and easy, so I am getting by just fine without a full sized board. The keys, although they don't feel like a more expensive unit would have, do work well and the touch sensitive key velocity works great in my opinion. I absolutely love that I can control the record, play and rewind, etc., right on the keyboard. I use Cubase 5, and was thrilled to find a midi map file on the M-Audio site that imported into Cubase perfectly for me. Nonetheless, I plugged it in and it worked right off the bat.

I was concerned about using this via USB with Windows 10 after reading a couple of discussion boards, and the fact that M-Audio doesn't produce drivers for Windows 10. It has pitch and modulation wheels, which are essential to me, and they work great. After doing some research, I found the M-Audio Oxygen 8 V2 on eBay for about $50 brand new in the box. I also have limited space, and even though I would love a full sized keyboard, it really wouldn't fit well in my current setup, and it exceeds my budget.

I produce my own music and I'm not a keyboard player, but I do construct keyboard lines, which I edit together and create loops with. This keyboard is not for a serious keyboard player, but for what I assume is it's target demographic (like myself), it is perfect.
